A Day Trip to Monument Valley from Scottsdale

September 30, 2025

“This is where the land becomes legend.” Monument Valley’s iconic silhouettes have shaped the world’s image of the American West.

It’s the kind of place that feels like a movie—lifted from the screen, with towering red rock buttes rising from the desert floor, astounding and timeless. You’ve seen it before: in the final scene of Forrest Gump, in the spoofed “Ornament Valley” in Pixar’s Cars, and in the vast desert backdrops that defined classic Westerns. Thankfully, a day trip from Scottsdale brings you into that cinematic world, and it’s closer than you think!

Top Things To Do

  • Scenic Drive: Take the 17-mile Valley Drive loop (best with a high-clearance vehicle) to see iconic formations like The Mittens, Totem Pole, and John Ford’s Point.

  • Guided Navajo Tour: For deeper insight, book a jeep tour led by a local Navajo guide who shares the region’s stories, geology, and culture. Navajo Spirit Tours is a trusted operator.

  • The View Hotel Overlook: Even if you don’t stay overnight, this stop offers one of the most photographed views in the Southwest.

“It’s been a long time since Monument Valley was more than just a gimmick—a readily identifiable backdrop.”
Buzz Bissinger, quoted in Vanity Fair

  • Goulding’s Museum: A quick stop here reveals the Hollywood-meets-history story of how Monument Valley became a film icon!

  • Hunt’s Mesa Overlook: For a dramatic, elevated view, take a guided trip to Hunt’s Mesa: an unforgettable vantage point that’s ideal for photographers and adventure seekers.

Local Tips

When to Go & What to Pack: Spring and fall offer the best weather. Summer temps can hit 100°F, and winter nights get bitter cold. Pack plenty of water, sun protection, and snacks for the road. There are limited food stops between towns.

Getting There Safely: The most direct route is via US-89 North and US-160 East through Tuba City and Kayenta. Allow at least 10 hours round trip, and consider overnighting nearby if you want more time to explore.
